Elon hints at adding lossless audio and AirPlay support to Teslas

Tesla CEO Elon Musk replied to Twitter user ShibaDoge (@JaconB1290H) who praised Tesla’s audio quality despite being limited to Bluetooth streaming.

He asked Elon if it would be possible for Tesla to add Apple Airplay, which would enable lossless streaming. He also pointed out that Tesla vehicles already have the necessary hardware capability.

Musk replied saying that his audio engineering team will discuss the possibility of adding Apple AirPlay and lossless quality music support, along with other auditory improvements.

Musk also took the opportunity to highlight the incredible sound system of both the Tesla Model S and the Model X.

Lossless music streaming is a premium option on certain platforms that allows you to listen to high-resolution audio files. High-resolution lossless audio means the music file hasn’t lost any audio quality due to compression methods.

Tesla currently supports TIDAL lossless audio, but it is limited to downloaded songs on WiFi. More popular streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music also offer lossless streaming but are not yet implemented in Teslas.

While Elon did hint at Airplay support, another possibility is that Tesla uses a different streaming protocol such as Google Cast which is used on various devices like Chromecast and many others.

This could be the case as Tesla has been reluctant to implement any Apple products in its vehicles such as Apple AirPlay or Apple Music.

AirPlay support could potentially bring additional video streaming options to Teslas by letting you stream video directly from your phone to the car’s center display.

This could also be the start of Tesla working more closely with Apple. If Tesla looks into adding AirPlay support, will they also consider adding support other Apple services? Apple Music and CarPlay are among the most requested features in a Tesla.

Whichever direction Tesla heads in, we may soon see improved audio streaming in Tesla vehicles.

Tesla may soon be able to close your windows for you

Ugh. That moment you look out and see the pouring rain flowing down the window pane nearby. You bite your lip as you remember that you left the windows open on your Tesla.

It was so hot…You had vented the windows via the Tesla app to help prevent your glass roof from irradiating your interior into molten lava. Now the rain must be drenching your interior, soaking your seats and floor mats. A scramble to open the app brings a welcome surprise.

Somehow, your Tesla knew to close its own windows. Has your car developed self-aware Artificial Intelligence? No, not yet at least.

Tesla is added a new helpful function: automatic window closing with rain forecasts.

Announced on Twitter by Elon Musk on May 30th, 2022, Tesla now appears willing to tie meteorological forecasts to car actions.

While weather-based actions have been part of API services like IFTTT, this marks the first time Tesla has planned to use weather data to trigger an action taken by a car.

Tesla appears to be heavily invested in weather prediction lately, as witnessed by their use of weather data in the new range prediction models announced in update 2022.16.

The new energy usage model factors in predicted weather conditions when calculating range and energy usage.

In addition, Chinese drivers receive air quality index numbers in their status bar. However, these features do not affect the state of the car.

The ability for Tesla vehicles to automatically perform certain functions based on predictive weather certainly offers additional opportunities to use weather data.

Future use of weather data could theoretically include automatically changing a driver’s acceleration mode to ‘Chill’ when snow and ice are forecasted.

However, a Tesla equipped with a HEPA filter could activate Bioweapon Defense mode on Orange Air Quality days to screen out pollen and other contaminants.

The possibilities for using weather data to modify car settings are seemingly endless.

Tesla may soon support applying the brakes automatically when regen is limited

It’s challenging to determine Tesla’s best feature or the one that has changed driving habits the most, but regenerative braking must be high on the list for anyone who owns an electric vehicle.

After getting accustomed to the system, the brake pedal becomes obsolete.

However, that piece of metal to the left of the accelerator is quickly remembered during cold temperatures or when the battery is fully charged and regenerative braking is reduced or not available.

A feature found in Tesla’s latest update (2022.16) appears to address that issue by adding an option to make the car perform the same with or without regenerative braking.

When regenerative braking is reduced and the driver lets off the accelerator pedal the car will automatically apply its regular brakes. This gives the driver a consistent driving experience whether regenerative braking is fully available or limited.

Regenerative braking is one of the most significant factors that make electric vehicles so efficient. While in motion, if the driver applies less pressure to the accelerator or lifts their foot nearly off the pedal to decelerate, most EVs will slow down like the brakes are being applied, but they are not.

This one-foot driving style saves the use of brake pads and sends a charge back to the battery, creating additional energy. Tesla believes this is such an important feature it made the strongest regenerative braking mode standard in 2020.

However, if the car is fully charged, the battery will not take more energy. This system has also been known to act differently in cold climates.

Now, thanks to the 2022.16 update, during those circumstances, specific Tesla’s Model 3s and Model Ys will perform the same without the ability to engage regenerative braking.

In the release notes, Tesla stated, “Your car can now automatically apply regular brakes for consistent deceleration when regenerative braking is limited due to battery temperature or state of charge.”

This feature appears to only be available on limited Model 3s and Model Ys, but it’s possible that Tesla is testing out the feature on very limited hardware before making it available more broadly.

Understandably, some drivers may be turned off by the car blending in the brakes without the driver specifically pressing the brake pedal, so Tesla has made this feature optional.

If drivers want to be reacquainted with their brake pedal, then they don’t need to enable the new feature; for those who do: tap Controls > Pedals & Steering > Apply Brakes When Regenerative Braking Is Limited. But, again, this is only available for select Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.

There’s no news on when it will be made available for more broadly.

Another change came through on the latest over-the-air update, so subtle you may not have realized it was there.

After reading this, you may want to check out the display’s top left corner. There is a line that is directly above the speedometer. Maybe you’ve noticed it before and not given it a second glance, but the line provides some valuable information.

The line is in the center if the car is not using or gaining energy, but it turns black during acceleration and green during regenerative braking.

You’re not alone if you haven’t noticed it or ignored it, as Tesla has made the line thicker and easier to see. This update is also only available for Model 3 and Model Y Teslas.
